Virginia Tech: The media at its worst.
When I first thought about this issue I wasn’t sure if it should even be something I should put on my blog. But then when I saw every newspaper today had the same photo of this disgusting psycho, I knew I had to at least put my thoughts out into the WWW, even if nobody is reading this blog (is there anyone reading it?), it is something that needs to be said. And I am going to be as concise and to the point as I can, cause heaven knows there is enough about this tragic situation already saturating every form of media out there.
My thoughts are simply aimed at the media, and the role they are playing in this whole thing. Does the media actually care that they are giving this sicko exactly what he wanted? Do they not realize that by posting his photos, his video, his “manifesto”, they are reinforcing exactly what he wanted to achieve, to become more than he ever was in life. If the media took a global and united stand to not give in, to not post anything put together by this POS, then and only then would they have done something admirable, something that would have help the world and given it a chance to properly take in the tragedy that unfolded that day. Then and only then would the victims have actually died for something important, instead of what they have become now; a footnote in this sickos useless existence. All of the worlds physical, emotional, and mental energy is being directed at someone who doesn’t deserve it. This energy should be directed at the family and friends of the people of Virgina Tech. I am not saying turn the media storm on them. I am saying let people grieve in private for once, give them some time, and when everything has calmed down and people are ready to deal with the issues this event has raised, then things can start being looked at again.
Leave the psycho out of this (I am avoiding saying his name on purpose), his cowardice at taking his own life speaks volumes about his personality. To not be around to take claim and own up for what you have done is a true sign of a weak person. It is so much easier to leave photos and videos and writings for everyone else to dissect and interpret, instead of being able to defend yourself (because you know that what you stand for is hollow, useless, and weak). This was something in the making for a long time, and the media has played right along with it. And they know it to, and disgustingly, they go along with it, and unfortunately the world eats it up as well, never questioning the sick feeling that sits in the bottom of their stomachs. It will only be a matter of time before some newspaper actually publishes his “manifesto”, and at that point he will have truly reached his desired goal.
The only way for the people of Virgina, and the students of Virgina Tech, to gain any sort of retribution against this sicko is to get the media to back off, to not post any pictures or videos, to not mention his views or quote from his writing, to direct their attention somewhere else (perhaps gun control?) so that he will fall into the background, fading away into obscurity, keeping his life after his death, the same as his life while he was alive…..nothing.
It take’s a strong person to stand up and lay claim to their current situation in their life, instead of trying to find reasons and excuses outside of oneself. This psycho was blaming every body and any body that he could for the reasons why he did what he did. Nobody else did what he did, nobody else was walking through that school that day, nobody else was taking 32 peoples lives…it was him and only him. Blaming others for our problems will not, and does not, solve them, because they are not us. Only we can save ourselves, only we can change ourselves, only we can choose and put into motion our own thoughts, words, and actions. I think the sooner people realize this the better the world will become.
